Legacy systems modernized with AI, without losing the business rules
Modernix is the Semantix AI Suite solution for modernizing legacy systems. It maps the current system in full, converts the code to current technologies and proves each step, so the company can leave the legacy behind without stopping operations.
The problem it solves
The system that runs the business was written decades ago, and fewer and fewer people know how it works.
Modernix, the translator
In other words
It is like renovating a building with the residents still inside: every wall is mapped before the work starts, and the renovation happens floor by floor.
What Modernix does
Modernization covers three fronts: understanding the current system, converting the code and proving that the new system does exactly what the old one did.
Understand the legacy
- Complete system mapPrograms, the calls between them, files, databases, interfaces and batch routines, all mapped and linked.
- Documented business rulesRules that exist only in the code, including those no one ever documented, are found and described before any conversion.
- Measured complexityEach component gets a complexity and risk measure that guides the order of the modernization.
Convert the code
- From mainframe to cloudCOBOL programs, with JCL, VSAM and CICS, converted to Java with Spring Boot and Spring Batch, exposed through REST APIs.
- Other legacy platformsOracle Forms, Visual Basic, RPG (AS/400) and Natural converted to Java or .NET, with web interfaces in Angular or React.
- Rules preservedThe new code keeps the business rules of the original system: the same input gives the same result.
Prove and deploy
- Equivalence testsAutomated tests run the old and the new system with the same data and compare the results.
- Phased deploymentEach part goes into production separately, with no single cutover, while the rest remains on the current system.
- An assistant that knows the systemAn AI agent that knows the system’s dependencies and rules answers the team’s questions throughout the project.
How the modernization happens
Follow along with an example: a COBOL billing system on the mainframe that needs to move to the cloud.
01Map
The system is read in full, with all its dependencies and business rules.
In the example: Every billing program and every file it uses is mapped and documented.
02Plan
The system is divided into parts that can be modernized one at a time, starting with the lowest risk.
In the example: Rate calculation is chosen as the first part to modernize.
03Convert
The code is converted to the chosen technology, with the business rules preserved.
In the example: The rate routines become Java services with REST APIs.
04Prove
Both systems process the same data, and the new part only moves forward when the results match.
In the example: The invoices produced by both systems are compared line by line.
05Deploy
The new part goes into production with monitoring, and the cycle starts again with the next one.
In the example: The rate service moves to the cloud, and the mainframe keeps handling the rest.
From where to where
Target technologies are defined with the company’s team, according to the architecture it already uses or wants to adopt.
| Current system | Target |
|---|---|
| COBOL, JCL, VSAM and CICS (mainframe) | Java with Spring Boot and Spring Batch, services exposed through REST APIs, in the cloud |
| Oracle Forms | Java or .NET, with a web interface in Angular or React |
| Visual Basic | .NET or Java, with a web interface |
| RPG (AS/400) and Natural | Java or .NET, in a microservices architecture |
Works together with
The suite’s products form a single platform and can be used together in the same process.
Frequently asked questions
Common questions about Modernix
Does the current system have to stop?
No. Modernization happens in parts: each new part goes into production once it is proven, while the rest remains on the current system.
What about business rules no one documented?
They are found in the code itself during mapping and documented before any conversion. This also reduces dependence on the few people who know the system.
How do we know the new system does the same as the old one?
Automated tests run both systems with the same data and compare the results. A part is only released when the results match.
How does Modernix relate to the rest of the suite?
Once modernized, the system offers APIs that LinkAPI connects to AI agents. Modernization therefore also opens the way to automating processes with agents.
